CD 164 - Mold 14
Features: Lettering is well-spaced but shallow, with rounded edges. On front, there are no discernable blot outs; the C is made similar to the G. On reverse, a large circle blot-out is visible after 38 on some pieces. NO. 38 is unusually small, only about 6mm compared to the usual 9mm; this was retained from the original Gayner mold (see below). There is no dash after 38. The mold number is placed differently than other molds, below 38 rather than below NO. On some pieces, there is a slightly raised band a little over 7mm wide that encircles the skirt beneath LYNCHBURG and NO. 38 (see below); for a less pronounced version of this band or "slug plate" see Mold 8, Mold 8.1, and Mold 13. Several unique features of this mold are shared with Mold 13, both of which retained these features from the original Gayner molds. This mold occurs with SB (see below).
Further Information: The lines around the skirt and shallow "slug plate" on Lynchburg CD 164 Molds 13 and 14 were features of the original Gayner molds from which these were retooled (see comparison, CD 164, Mold 13). It is possible that these two molds had already been reused and modified by Gayner from another company's molds. However, there is no evidence at this time to prove that or to determine what the original molds were.
Mold Number Location: On reverse below 38.
